A group of 10 foreign nationals were rescued by agents from the Fifth Naval Region after they were found adrift in a homemade boat 30 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres. The rescue took place on Thursday morning when the crew of the sailboat "Thor Heyerdahl" spotted the group at sea.
The crew noticed that the group was in danger due to the rough waves and adverse weather conditions, and promptly moved to assist them. During the rescue operation, the container ship "CMA CGM Mercantour" also became aware of the situation and alerted the authorities.
In response to the alert, the Navy dispatched an Interceptor Patrol from the Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) of Isla Mujeres. Upon reaching the area, they found the foreign nationals still on the sailboat, 11 kilometers north of the island, where they were successfully rescued.
The rescued individuals were brought to land to receive necessary medical attention. They were then handed over to the National Institute of Migration and health authorities for further assistance, while their legal status in the country is currently being determined.
