Fourteen foreign nationals and two Mexican citizens were recently rescued from the waters near Progreso, Yucatán. The rescue operation was conducted by the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), who also serve as the Coast Guard. The Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) Yucalpetén and the Naval Health Department of the Naval Hospital of Yucatán were responsible for the rescue mission.

The rescued individuals were found on two boats near the port of Progreso, Yucatán. One of these boats was manned by the two Mexican citizens.

The rescue operation was initiated after the Navy received an anonymous tip about an overcrowded small boat. In response, the Navy dispatched two Defender-type boats with navy personnel. Upon locating the reported vessels, the personnel successfully rescued the 14 foreign nationals and two Mexican citizens and brought them to the ENSAR Yucalpetén.

Once on shore, they were examined by Naval Health personnel. All were found to be in good health, with the exception of one man who was suffering from severe dehydration. He was immediately transferred to the Naval Hospital for further medical treatment.

The foreign nationals were handed over to the National Institute of Migration (INM) and the General Prosecution of the Republic (FGE) for the necessary legal proceedings as per existing legislation.

The Ninth Naval Zone has provided a public telephone number, 969 935 4049, and email, zn9@semar.gob.mx, for communication. In addition, the Secretary of the Navy has shared an emergency contact number for sea emergencies: 800 MARINA 1 (800 6274621).
