The 16th Mayan Sacred Journey is scheduled for May 17 and 18 this year. This annual event aims to honor and strengthen ancestral traditions, paying tribute to the young moon goddess, Ix Chel, and Ixchebelyax, the elderly mother who weaves the destiny of men while pouring water over the earth.

The event will reenact the trade, religiosity, and navigation of the original inhabitants of the eastern coast. This year, 348 canoeists are expected to participate, with a gender split of 47% women and 53% men. These dedicated participants have been physically and mentally preparing for over six months to take on this challenge.

The Mayan Sacred Journey is a deeply spiritual event, steeped in the rich tradition of the Maya culture. It serves as a reminder of the sacred bond between humanity and nature, making it a highly anticipated annual tradition for a devoted community.

Inspired by the pilgrimage detailed in the Chilam Balam of Chumayel, the canoeists will embark from the ancient site of P’ole and journey towards the island of Cozumel. This artistic endeavor, known as the "Water Wizards," incorporates rituals, dances, and trade. It is a tribute to the legacy of the ancestors and a celebration of their lineage.

The Mayan Sacred Journey is an effort by the Xcaret Group to revive and spread a pre-Hispanic tradition that disappeared over five centuries ago. It's a cultural revival based on archaeological elements that the Xcaret Group has researched and recreated. This event offers a glimpse into what the pre-Hispanic Mayan world might have been like.

Leticia Aguerrebere, Corporate Director of Art and Culture, explained that the event has been running for sixteen years. It provides a respectful platform for participants to share aspects of their culture, principles that are at the heart of the Mayan Sacred Journey. The vision is one of prosperity and shared value, especially after last year when they were unable to use the full name.
