The last Game Night of 2024 at Isla Mujeres' Bird Park was a great success, attracting 130 children despite the chilly, windy, and rainy weather. The event took place in the La Gloria neighborhood and featured a variety of educational board games.
Children aged between 4 and 12, bundled up against the cold and accompanied by their parents or older siblings, started arriving at 6:30 am. They were eagerly looking forward to a fun-filled night of games and laughter. Both children and adults, including many foreign volunteers, were deeply engrossed in popular games like "Connect 4", "Candyland", "Trouble", and "Sorry". They also explored new games like "Snakes and Ladders", with "Jenga" proving to be the most popular among all age groups.
Lisa Godfrey, the local resident who initiated Game Nights, appealed to tourists and the foreign community living in Isla Mujeres for more game donations, particularly "Jenga". This game can be bought at the local supermarket where prices are more affordable.
"We are extremely grateful to the volunteers who came to help, and especially to the tourists who donated games and made this event possible," she said.
Godfrey added that the event not only provides entertainment but also helps children, particularly the younger ones, learn essential skills such as counting, understanding directions, recognizing colors, and strategizing. Moreover, each family gets to take a board game home to enjoy with their siblings, friends, and parents.
"The significance of this event for the children is hard to put into words, but any volunteer could probably tell you better than I can. Merry Christmas from Isla Mujeres, and thank you for making these children's day," she concluded.
