The National Institute of Migration (INM) welcomed 28 Cuban migrants on Cozumel Island after they were rescued at sea by an international cruise on Monday, April 22. The group is comprised of 27 adults – 18 men and nine women – and one unaccompanied minor.

Upon their arrival, the migrants were handed over to the INM by the cruise ship's crew and underwent an immediate immigration administrative process. The INM worked in conjunction with the International Health Department of the Ministry of Health to provide the group with a medical check-up.

After the initial assessment, the migrants were transferred to Playa del Carmen. They were then moved to a temporary INM station in Cancun, where they are currently being cared for and housed while their immigration status is being determined.

The unaccompanied minor has been placed under the care of the municipal System for Integral Family Development (DIF) in Benito Juárez. The minor is now residing at the Casa Filtro Shelter, where protective measures are being implemented and a plan for the restoration of rights is being established.
