On February 14, 2025, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, was the backdrop for a mass wedding ceremony. The event, held on Valentine's Day, saw 280 couples exchange vows, including a same-sex couple and a visually impaired couple.
The ceremony was presided over by the city's mayor, Estefanía Mercado. She spoke about the importance of patience, empathy, and love in marriage. She acknowledged that while marriage brings moments of infinite happiness, it also presents many challenges.
Mercado was joined by the honorary president of the State System for Integral Family Development (DIF) of Quintana Roo, Veronica Lezama Espinosa, and the head of the local organization, Eduardo Asencio. Together, they celebrated the union of the 280 couples.
During the ceremony, officiated by civil registrar officer Marcela Contreras, Mercado encouraged the couples to reaffirm their love in the face of adversity. She emphasized that love has the power to transform everything and knows no limits or distinctions.
She also noted that Valentine's Day not only celebrates love but also reaffirms the belief that love is the best tool for social transformation. She stated, "when there is love, there is prosperity, respect, and peace."
Veronica Lezama Espinosa congratulated the couples and wished them a future filled with love, respect, and commitment. She also reiterated the government's commitment to working for the welfare of the most vulnerable.
Eduardo Asencio, in his welcome address, praised the efforts of Mercado and Lezama in building strong and happy families and ensuring well-being and opportunities for all.
The ceremony, held at the Municipal DIF Amphitheater, was attended by Lizbeth Jimenez Cordero, representing the State Civil Registry; Osman Corona, director of the Municipal Civil Registry; and Deputies Lili Mis and Euterpe Gutierrez.
An additional 30 couples are set to marry later at the Puerto Aventuras Mayor's Office, bringing the total number of couples married in the Solidaridad municipality to 310.
