Dozens of families in a Puerto Aventuras subdivision were put at risk due to the negligence of the managers overseeing the Mayan Train construction project. 300 kilograms of gel explosives were discovered in an apartment, leading to the evacuation of the area.
The explosives were found around 11:30 AM in a home located in the third stage of the Puerto Maya subdivision, on Chicozapote Street, at the intersection of Puerto Maya Avenue. The homeowner discovered the explosives in a blue plastic drum capable of holding up to 200 liters, along with detonators and wires, while collecting the belongings of her son who had recently passed away. The explosives had been left in the care of a construction worker who had also died a week prior. Upon discovery, authorities secured the area and began evacuating nearby residents.
The local community blamed the Mayan Train project managers for their recklessness, which put emergency services in a difficult position. For the first time in Solidaridad, a "red code" was issued at the Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Fire Department. This triggered the involvement of the municipal police, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard, who evacuated several families from the area to ensure their safety. The evacuation was initiated after a relative of the deceased worker reported the presence of explosives in the house. Given the seriousness of the situation, the State Attorney General's Office was called in to safely collect and secure the explosives.
The area was cordoned off for several hours while the explosives were carefully moved to a safe location, ensuring the safety of residents. In total, 25 families were evacuated during the operation. Additionally, a child was found alone in a locked apartment on the third floor and was safely rescued. Authorities from all three levels of government worked together to secure the area and conduct an investigation.
This incident underscores the importance of stringent regulation and supervision of dangerous materials, particularly in residential areas where the potential for disaster is high.
