Yucatan: Hub of Wine & Spirits Revolution in Mexico

Yucatan is enhancing its status as a key contributor to Mexico's wine and spirits culture. This is largely due to the significant involvement of Alberto Nacif, a Yucatan-based sommelier and entrepreneur, in the upcoming Brussels World Contest Mexico Selection 2024. The event is scheduled from November 20 to 22 in San Luis Potosí.

Nacif, the director of Grupo Comitiva and founder of the Mexican Academy of Sommeliers in the Peninsula, is a member of the esteemed jury. They will conduct a blind tasting of over 500 wine and spirits labels. The aim is to recognize excellence and create a quality guide to elevate Mexico's winemaking heritage.

Nacif emphasized the significance of this event in boosting the cultural and economic profile of the region's sector. He stated, "My role as a state representative positions our region in a highly specialized field. Although Yucatan is not a wine-producing state, it has a significant culinary and cultural tradition. Interest in oenology and mixology is increasing. My participation in this contest enables me to actively link our cultural wealth with international trends."

In 2023, Yucatan was chosen to host the competition due to its historical, natural, and architectural splendor, as well as its culinary offerings and hospitality. These factors have aided in promoting the culture of wine and spirits.

Mexico's wine consumption market has been expanding in recent years, with a per capita consumption of 1.3 liters, as per the Mexican Wine Council. This growth, fueled by tourism and gastronomy, presents an opportunity for states like Yucatan. Even though they don't produce wine, they have discovered a new cultural and economic allure in oenology and mixology.

The Brussels World Contest Mexico Selection will feature an international jury of experts from Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, Honduras, the United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom. In the global edition of the contest held in China last September, Mexico secured 58 medals, including 18 gold and 40 silver, reinforcing its international presence.

Besides his judging duties at national and international events, Nacif organizes workshops, contests, and activities in Merida to promote the culture of wine and spirits. He emphasizes the importance of respecting their origin and production process.
