Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena has announced plans to collaborate with shipbuilding company Fincantieri to establish the largest shipyard in Latin America at Puerto Progreso. This project would position Yucatan as a significant hub for trade and logistics in southeastern Mexico.

The proposed development includes dredging work to achieve a depth of 14 meters, widening the access channel, and constructing platforms to accommodate large-draft vessels. These vessels include 60,000-ton cargo ships and Icon and Oasis class cruise ships.

With its connection to the Maya Train and the Trans-Isthmic Train, Puerto Progreso is set to become a crucial part of the logistical corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This would attract investment and lower transportation costs.

The transformation project's primary goal is to modernize the Deepwater Port of Progreso. This would consolidate Progreso as a strategic point for international trade, establishing connections between Yucatan and Asia, Europe, and the United States.
