The 16th edition of the Full Ironman Cozumel 2024 saw Belgium, the United States, and France secure the top three overall spots. The event also served as the Latin American Championship, offering five places in the 2025 world championships in Kona, Hawaii, and Nice, France. Eduardo Pérez Sandi, the first Mexican to finish, came in at 19th place.
The atmosphere was electric as the winners of the men's and women's categories rang the victory bell and crossed the finish line, surrounded by applause, cheers, and words of encouragement. José Luis Chacón Méndez, the municipal president, praised the event as a staple of Cozumel's history and a testament to its reputation as the "Island of Sport."
Méndez also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Mara Lezama in promoting sports activities and attracting visitors to Quintana Roo through the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development initiative.
Belgian Bart Aernouts emerged as the overall winner, completing the race in seven hours, 39 minutes, and 24 seconds. He was closely followed by Chris Leifermant from the United States, who finished in 07:45:12. The third spot was claimed by French Leon Chavalier with a time of 07:46:58. The competition showcased the natural beauty of Cozumel, providing a stunning backdrop for the top three triathletes.
In the women's category, Anne Reischmann took first place with a time of 08:34:08. She was followed by Austria's Lisa Perterer in second place, and France's Justine Mathieux in third, who finished in 08:51:03.
The race was started by municipal president, José Luis Chacón Méndez; Juan Carlos Delgado, representing the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico; José Luis Sosa, the National President of the Mexican Council of Sports Tourism; and Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the director of the Parks and Museums Foundation, representing Governor Mara Lezama.
