Researchers from UNAM are delving into the genetics of the Yucatan yellow bat in Cozumel. This investigation is part of a collaborative effort with the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) to preserve the state's natural resources. The FPMC has provided full support for the genetic study, which has yielded taxonomic and morphological information about the bat.
The research was conducted at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park. This joint venture with various study centers aligns with the goals of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo. The genetic profiling of the Yucatan yellow bat will help identify potential population origins, assess its genetic diversity, and create more effective conservation strategies. This collaboration enhances scientific knowledge and bolsters conservation efforts for the island's biodiversity.
The researcher was able to secure skin samples for further analysis. This will help identify the original centers of species colonization. Punta Sur's protected natural area will continue to serve as an invaluable site for future research aimed at preserving the island's natural heritage.
