The government of Quintana Roo has initiated a new strategy called Coral Points. This network of 581 safe spaces, supported by local businesses, is spread throughout the state. The primary goal of this initiative is to assist women experiencing violence. This is particularly crucial in a region where 70% of women have been victims of some form of aggression. The Coral Points strategy aims to ensure women have access to resources and protection during times of danger.
Esther Burgos Jiménez, the Secretary of Women, emphasized that Coral Points is a crucial part of a comprehensive effort to combat gender-based violence. Quintana Roo has been under a Gender Violence Alert since 2017. These safe spaces will offer immediate refuge and access to psychological support for women, contributing to their safety and wellbeing.
The Women's Secretariat, an organization dedicated to bolstering public policies that promote gender equality and the rights of women, girls, and adolescents, is also a part of this initiative. The Secretariat will incorporate the General Directorate of the Gender Violence Alert to provide a more efficient and coordinated response to incidents of aggression.
Quintana Roo continues to make strides in promoting gender equality through constitutional reforms. These include the establishment of a Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Women and a dedicated budget to address women's needs. Governor Mara Lezama remains committed to collaborating with various institutions to ensure a safer and more equitable environment for all women in the state.
