The Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Atenea Gómez, recently reviewed the ongoing construction of the municipality's first Animal Welfare Center. The center is set to provide medical services, a shelter for abandoned animals, and a park for the enjoyment of both residents and their pets.
Gómez Ricalde announced, "Our goal is to open the first phase, the Animal Welfare Clinic, by December 31. Following this, the shelter will be completed in the second phase, and finally, the park will be ready in the third phase. This will provide a much-needed space for island families and their pets."
The project, managed by the Public Works department, is in response to community requests for a dedicated facility to care for pets. It aims to promote education, care, and animal protection policies. The center will also house a shelter for stray animals and offer affordable services to ensure their wellbeing, including veterinary and grooming care.
The center's ground floor will feature an adoption room, a medical area with clinics, and a grooming area for dogs and cats. This municipal project aligns with the New Deal for the Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo, a state initiative championed by Governor Mara Lezama. This strategy emphasizes collaboration between the government and civil society to protect animals and promote their care and wellbeing.
The Isla Mujeres Animal Welfare Center will be located on Perimetral Poniente avenue, adjacent to the Anticyclonic Shelter.
