The Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo has conducted a search at the "Lázaro Cárdenas del Río" taxi union in Playa del Carmen. This follows an investigation into an alleged assault on tourists in the Xcaret park area, a video of which was shared on social media.
During the operation, officials seized vehicles allegedly involved in the incident. The search was confined to these vehicles, with no other areas of the union premises being affected.
It's worth noting that according to their own procedures, the Playa del Carmen taxi union had already immobilized the implicated vehicles. They had also begun an internal investigation to cooperate with authorities and identify any potential culprits.
The Quintana Roo Prosecutor's Office has clarified that this operation is unrelated to recent events involving the Cancún taxi union. It was reported that the Playa del Carmen taxi union has shown a willingness to cooperate fully with the Prosecutor's Office. They also reiterated their commitment to transparency and legal compliance.
The "Lázaro Cárdenas del Río" union has been proactive in implementing processes that ensure order and zero tolerance for misconduct among its members. This has led to instances where license holders and operators have been discharged.
Following the search and seizure of some vehicles, it is expected that the general assembly of the Playa del Carmen taxi union will proceed as usual this Sunday.
Over the past weekend, it was reported that taxi drivers from the "Lázaro Cárdenas del Río" union attacked a driver who had gone to Xcaret Park to pick up a friend. The taxi drivers allegedly mistook him for an Uber operator.
Initially, it was thought that the attack took place at Tulum airport, but it was later clarified that it occurred in the park. However, it remains unclear whether it was one or two separate incidents.
Thanks to videos shared on social media, this new assault came to light. The victim claimed that the attackers even tried to shoot at his car. "So you can see how rowdy the taxi drivers (from Playa del Carmen) are, five of them just cornered me, I couldn't record it and look what they did: a bullet even struck here, the cowards didn't get me. I'm going to catch them, they're rowdy. Nothing happens, just so you know," said the driver who was assaulted in the video.
