The Tulum City Council, in collaboration with the Federal Maritime Land Zone Directorate (Zofemat), has set ambitious objectives for the coming year. They aim to retain existing certifications, expand certification programs, and strive for the highest quality standards. This initiative is designed to establish Tulum's beaches as a global benchmark.
According to Juan Antonio Garza, director of Zofemat, the objective is not just to maintain current certifications, but to extend them to more beaches and pursue new accolades that guarantee excellence in cleanliness, accessibility, and services. "Our beaches are internationally recognized, and we have a responsibility to provide both tourists and locals with the best beaches that meet the highest certification standards," he stated.
The next phase involves fulfilling specific requirements based on the type of certification. These range from regular micro and macro plastic collection to providing amenities such as restrooms, access ramps, clearly marked swimming lanes, and more. "These factors not only ensure environmental quality, but also enhance the visitor experience," Garza added.
At present, four Tulum beaches hold the Platinum Beach certification, a distinction that attests to their quality in sustainability, cleanliness, and services. However, the goal now is to achieve even higher standards. "Our work is ongoing; we want every beach in the municipality to stand out as an example of conservation and responsible enjoyment," Garza emphasized.
These efforts are not solely focused on attracting more tourists. They also aim to ensure that Tulum's residents can enjoy their coastal areas in the best possible conditions. The Zofemat directorate will continue to spearhead initiatives that keep the municipality's beaches among the world's top tourist destinations.
With this strategy, Tulum reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and the celebration of its natural assets as part of its identity. The coming year will be crucial in solidifying this endeavor.
