Public transportation operators of the Maya Caribe line in Cancún have reported a disturbing incident at a local "combis" base. As per the circulating audios in social network groups, the operators were threatened to act as informants for a criminal group. Non-compliance would result in severe consequences, they were warned.
The incident unfolded when armed men, arriving in a taxi from the Andrés Quintana Roo union, threatened the checker on duty, allegedly with a firearm. The attackers demanded the checker to monitor and report local activities for their criminal group. They also insisted that the operators must obey a new checker, supposedly linked with their group. Those who refuse to cooperate were threatened with dire consequences.
This threat has instilled fear among the "combis" operators, leading them to anonymously seek the support of the authorities. The checker involved in the incident chose to resign immediately, fearing for his own safety and that of his family.
The taxi used by the attackers is reportedly associated with the Andrés Quintana Roo union, which has been previously linked to criminal activities. Notably, a recent raid conducted by the State Attorney General's Office on this union revealed a room where several lives had been taken.
The public transportation operators, feeling vulnerable in these situations, are urging local and state authorities to take swift action. They hope for measures that ensure their safety and put an end to the extortions and threats from criminal groups operating without fear of reprisal in the region.
