If you're planning a visit to Playa del Carmen this Christmas season, you're in for a treat. The city is bustling with festive activities suitable for families, couples, or solo travelers. Here, we've compiled a list of the main events to look forward to.
Quinta Avenida, the tourist hub of Playa del Carmen, is preparing to dazzle visitors this December. The city council has invited all businesses to join a decoration contest, promising to transform the iconic street into a winter wonderland.
Mayor Angy Estefanía Mercado Asencio led the inaugural event – the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree at Plaza 28 de Julio. The plaza was teeming with visitors for the occasion. "Magical Christmas is a celebration for everyone. This will undoubtedly be an unforgettable time for the residents of Solidaridad," she said in her speech.
A packed schedule of activities is planned for December, including dance, theatre, and nativity plays every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Christmas parades are scheduled for the 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st, starting on Constituyentes Avenue and ending at Plaza 28 de Julio. The Christmas lights on Quinta Avenida will be switched on the 15th.
Mayor Mercado also announced a "Christmas Motorcycle Caravan" for December 21st, when the "Lizt Alfonso Ballet, Dance Cuba" will perform at the City Theater. There will also be a toy distribution event at the DIF. On Christmas Eve, a large sand nativity scene will be created at Fundadores beach.
New Year's parades will take place on the 29th and 31st, culminating in a grand celebration to bid farewell to 2024. Two major concerts are also lined up, with Los Ángeles Azules performing on December 16th, and La Arrolladora Banda Limón on the 30th.
Mayor Mercado also shared that over 50% of the pothole repairs in Playa del Carmen have been completed. She also announced the opening of three ice rinks from next Wednesday, located in Plaza 28 de Julio, Villas del Sol, and Puerto Aventuras.
The tree lighting event was a hit with families, who enjoyed performances from Disney characters like Ariel and Aladdin, the Children and Youth Orchestra of Playa del Carmen, and a performance of the Nutcracker ballet.
