Tourism Industry Ramps Up Cybersecurity to Combat Fraud

The tourism industry, including hotel chains, theme parks, and various businesses, is investing heavily in cybersecurity. These companies are spending anywhere from 30,000 pesos for a small business to over 20% of their daily operational costs on updating their electronic security systems. The aim is to prevent identity theft and cyber fraud, two of the biggest challenges facing the industry.

Many companies in the hotel industry have established complex and advanced IT departments. These departments not only ensure that their platforms are up-to-date, but they also maintain dedicated cybersecurity teams. These teams are constantly monitoring and verifying systems to prevent fraud.

Despite these precautions, brands from Quintana Roo are particularly vulnerable to fraud. This is due to the popularity of their destinations. Well-known brands such as Grupo Xcaret, Grupo Palace, Vidanta, Nickelodeon, and Temptation have all fallen victim to identity theft. Criminal networks use their names to commit fraud.

In 2022, Grupo Xcaret reported the discovery of various unauthorized websites, instant messaging groups, and networks. These entities were offering the group's experiences while pretending to be part of the official organization. In response, Grupo Xcaret strengthened its electronic and security systems and took legal action against these groups for impersonation and unfair competition.
