Cozumel's cenote waters, while not heavily polluted, are not safe for human consumption. The aquifers are in good condition, but careful monitoring is necessary to prevent future contamination, according to speleologist and researcher Germán Yáñez Mendoza.

A few years ago, a water quality study was conducted on the island's cenotes. The results were positive, indicating relatively low levels of pollution. However, due to the island's expanding urban sprawl, it is crucial to maintain constant surveillance.

While the cenote water is safe for activities like washing and bathing, it is not recommended for drinking. The water from cenotes or wells should not be used for drinking unless it has been appropriately treated. The researcher emphasized the need to inspect areas of irregular settlement to identify potential sources of aquifer contamination.

In summary, Cozumel's waters are generally healthy, but ongoing vigilance is necessary to prevent future contamination.
