In a recent incident in Cancún, police officers were filmed in what seems to be an act of corruption. The footage, captured by bystanders, shows the officers leading a person to an ATM at an HSBC bank branch on José López Portillo Avenue, near El Crucero. The video, which has since been widely shared on social media, shows a uniformed officer inside the ATM booth with the individual, appearing to give instructions.

While this was happening inside the HSBC branch, a police car with additional officers was parked outside, seemingly waiting for the individual to emerge with the alleged bribe money.

The person filming the incident can be heard commenting, "What efficient police, helping him to withdraw money," before adding, "they are hitting him, they are hitting him." The video shows the individual attempting to leave, but the officer blocks his exit, physically restrains him, and shuts the door to the ATM area.

Following the video's circulation on social media, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Benito Juárez confirmed that an investigation into the incident has been initiated. The department's statement reads: "The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of Benito Juárez has taken action regarding the case of an officer who is allegedly involved in an incident with a citizen at a bank branch on López Portillo Avenue, potentially violating the principles and values of this institution."

The statement further explains that the Internal Affairs Directorate has opened a case file, with the aim of conducting a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts and assign responsibility according to the law.

The incident has sparked criticism from Cancún locals, who are questioning the conduct of the officers involved and the wider police force. They are challenging why the department only seems to take action or impose penalties when a video becomes viral, suggesting that they are already aware of such misconduct among their officers.
