In celebration of the National Day of Mayan Culture on December 21, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa gathered around 490 Mayan dignitaries from Quintana Roo's ceremonial centers. The aim was to acknowledge the cultural wealth embodied by the Mayan communities and assure them of the government's continued efforts to promote their global visibility.
The gathering took place in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the heart of the Maya town. Governor Lezama emphasized the importance of celebrating Mayan Culture Day, stating that what is not recognized simply does not exist. She acknowledged that the Mayan people had long been overlooked and neglected, but assured that this new government values and celebrates their historical and cultural identity.
Governor Lezama affirmed that this government, guided by humanist and feminist principles, is committed to the Mayan people. This commitment is outlined in the New Agreement for Welfare and Development in Quintana Roo, aiming for success reflected in shared prosperity.
She highlighted that President Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico, enacted a law recognizing indigenous communities as public law entities with legal personality and their own heritage for the first time.
Governor Lezama also mentioned the recent completion of the Caste War Museum, which preserves the memory of a resilient and rebellious community in their quest for their ideals. She spoke of Mayaka´an, a rapidly growing tourist region, and the Maya Train with two stations that will bring social justice.
She announced further initiatives for Chan Santa Cruz, Xpichil, and Laguna Kaná, and reported good progress on the new general hospital, which has a budget of nearly one billion pesos.
The Governor emphasized that Felipe Carrillo Puerto is undergoing a transformation that brings success and shared prosperity while maintaining deep respect for traditions and customs.
The event, organized by the Institute for the Development of the Maya People and the Indigenous Communities of the State of Quintana Roo (INMAYA), included a traditional lunch with Mayan Dignitaries. The gathering celebrated unity, identity, and pride in Mayan culture.
Dignitaries from the five Mayan ceremonial centers of Chankah Veracruz, La Cruz Parlante, Tixcacal Guardia, Chumpón, and the three Mayan churches of Yaxley, X-Yatil, and Kantunilkín were present.
Mayor Mary Hernández expressed her gratitude to Governor Mara Lezama for her unwavering support to the municipality. She also emphasized the immense cultural value of the Mayan communities, symbolizing the strength and dignity of many men and women.
