Benito Juarez's Mayor, Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña, has confirmed that an investigation is underway into police officers allegedly involved in an extortion case. The officers were reportedly caught on video escorting an individual to an ATM. As soon as the footage was brought to their attention, the investigation commenced, and the officers were suspended from their duties. However, a formal complaint from the alleged victim is still pending.
The Mayor urged the public to report any such incidents to ensure appropriate action can be taken. "Filing a complaint is crucial," she said. "Without a complaint, there can be no decisive action. We need that trust. We're committing ourselves 100%, and that's what body cameras are for – to leave no room for doubt. They record audio and video, so if a situation like this arises, immediate action can be taken."
The Mayor emphasized that these investigations serve to remind the police force of the consequences of illegal activities. Such actions are unacceptable and undermine the consistent work of the force. The incident under investigation occurred on Monday, December 16, when a municipal police officer was seen escorting a citizen to an ATM on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue, while his partner stood guard.
Despite this incident, the Mayor acknowledged the many officers who perform their duties exceptionally well. She cited a recent case where a stolen vehicle was recovered and returned directly to its owner, bypassing the impound. "We will continue to honor and recognize the great police officers who do extraordinary work," she said. "The misdeeds of a few will not tarnish the entire force. Those involved should be sanctioned and have no place in the force."
