The Cape Catoche lighthouse on Isla Mujeres is under threat from sea erosion. To prevent further coastal loss, there is a need to install additional geotubes. Local fishermen and service providers have noted that two of the four infrastructures established in 2000 are already submerged by the sea.
The area around the lighthouse is a temporary setup for fishermen and tourists. However, rising sea levels due to global warming have led to increased erosion.
The local Port Authority has acknowledged the issue, stating that it falls under the purview of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SCT). They have indicated that intervention is necessary to prevent further damage to the lighthouse and surrounding area.
