Governor Mara Lezama has announced the reopening of the "El Meco" archaeological site. Located at kilometer 2.7 on the Puerto Juarez-Punta Sam road in the continental area of Isla Mujeres, this site is one of the oldest and most iconic on the north coast of Quintana Roo.
The site, which features ceremonial structures, altars, and shrines, has been restored and improved by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) under the Archaeological Zones Improvement Program (PROMEZA). Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa praised the work of INAH, the archaeologists, and SEDENA in the restoration and preservation of the site.
She encouraged locals, tourists, and visitors to explore the newly reopened site. The reopening of "El Meco" is part of a strategic project linked to the Maya Train and reflects the goals of the New Agreement for the Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo.
Governor Mara Lezama was joined by municipal authorities from Benito Juarez and Isla Mujeres for the announcement.
