In honor of National Mayan Culture Day, the Cultural Center of Playa del Carmen held a series of events to showcase the profound influence of the Mayan civilization on the nation's history. The event kicked off with a spiritual ceremony led by teacher Román Pat, seeking the blessings of the deities of the four cardinal points. This ceremony set the tone for the event, promoting an atmosphere of respect and unity, in line with the sacred principles of Mayan cosmogony.

The celebration, dubbed Jornada Maya’on, began with a seminar on Cultural Heritage. The seminar emphasized the significant impact of this ancient Mesoamerican civilization on the national identity and stressed the importance of preserving it as a living legacy. The seminar was facilitated by teacher Marcelo Santos, who provided a historical perspective on the Mayan resistance that persisted until 1928, when the Mayan people embraced both their Mayan and Mexican identities. He highlighted that culture is not static, but a dynamic force that fosters unity among individuals and communities.

The event, which took place over the past weekend, also explored different types of heritage, with a focus on tangible and intangible assets. The importance of language, traditions, and oral expressions were underscored as key elements in preserving cultures, a view supported by UNESCO.

Jornada Maya’on was a vibrant celebration filled with cultural activities, lectures, and opportunities for reflection, all aimed at emphasizing the central role of Mayan culture in shaping the identity of Playa del Carmen. In Mexico, National Mayan Culture Day is celebrated on December 21, as a way to honor and preserve the legacy of one of the most advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica.
