As the new year approached, there were concerns in Tulum about potential social unrest and its impact on tourism due to a planned demonstration by the "Free Beaches" movement. However, the demonstration was postponed after substantial agreements were reached with local authorities during a meeting on December 21st.
The group announced in a statement that the protest, originally scheduled for December 30th, was put on hold to allow authorities time to work on the commitments they had agreed to. While these agreements do not fully address the issue, the group's representatives view them as a significant step forward in their campaign for unrestricted access to Tulum's public beaches. The group confirmed that they will continue discussions with authorities on January 7th, aiming to find definitive solutions to their demands. The main point of contention is ensuring public access to the beaches, a matter that has caused increasing worry among locals and domestic tourists, who have been affected by restrictions in the hotel zone.
The Free Beaches movement has pledged to keep the public informed and emphasized the role of social pressure in transforming agreements into tangible actions. "The next meeting will be crucial in evaluating the progress made in implementing the agreed measures," they stated.
By delaying the protests, Tulum has avoided a situation of social unrest that could have negatively affected both its residents and the tourism industry during the peak season.
