The traditional open-water swimming competition in Puerto Morelos, known as the "Reef Route", has been scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025. The organizing committee is expecting to surpass the previous year's participation of over 700 swimmers. As the year 2024 draws to a close, preparations are already underway for the 20th edition of this popular event, which also serves as a qualifier for the National Championship in this aquatic discipline.

The Tourism Sports and Culture Promotion (Protudec) will oversee the organization of the event, with Iván Torres leading the organizing committee. The committee will collaborate with the Association of Swimmers of Quintana Roo AC, the Harbor Master, and local and state sports authorities. The competition will take place on the beach next to the main dock's lighthouse in Puerto Morelos, with an anticipated turnout of at least 700 swimmers, ranging in age from 6 to 70, from various states across Mexico.

The competition will also form part of the celebrations for the 27th anniversary of the National Reef Park. Swimmers will compete across six different distances: 250 meters, 1.25 kilometers, 2.5 kilometers, 5 kilometers, 7.5 kilometers, and 10 kilometers. The race course inside the sea will span 1.25 kilometers, with the start and finish line located on the beach in the old town of Puerto Morelos. Participants in the 250-meter race will swim to a buoy located 125 meters from the start.

The event will kick off at 7:30 AM on February 16 with the first wave of competitors, and the last wave will start at 12:40 PM. The 10-kilometer race will have a maximum time limit of 3 hours and 30 minutes, after which any remaining swimmers will be removed from the water. The "Reef Route" festivities will begin on Saturday, February 15, with package pickup available from 10 AM to 8 PM next to the dock where the leaning lighthouse is located.

Those interested in participating can still register online on the Protudec website throughout January.
