The first instance of wildlife roadkill for the year 2025 was reported on Universidades Avenue in Playa del Carmen, located approximately 50 meters from the Technological University of the Riviera Maya. Samantha Álvarez, the Secretary of the Environment and Climate Change, confirmed the incident was initially reported on social media. However, upon the arrival of inspectors to retrieve the fox's remains, they found the body was no longer present.

"We were notified about the roadkill, but the animal was gone by the time we arrived. We've previously documented roadkill incidents involving coatis and other wildlife in this part of Playa del Carmen," Álvarez stated.

In a separate incident, Álvarez noted a surge in reports on the night of December 31st concerning the impact of fireworks on household pets. Despite a ban on fireworks, enforcement was managed by the Secretary of Public Safety and Civil Protection.

In light of these events, the Secretary of the Environment issued a public appeal urging residents to adhere to regulations and abstain from activities that could endanger both wildlife and domestic pets in Playa del Carmen.
