Officials from Mérida's city council, alongside representatives from the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of Yucatán, gathered for a special city council session to commemorate the 483rd anniversary of Mérida. The event was hosted by Mérida's Mayor, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, and featured guest speaker Conchi León, a renowned playwright and teacher. Both women used their speeches to underscore the significant role women have played in the city's history and voiced their support for culture as a key area of focus for the local government.

Mayor Patrón Laviada used her address to highlight the integral role of women in the city's development and history. She noted that until recently, Mérida's history was largely told by men, with narratives focused on male conquerors, military men, and politicians. She acknowledged influential women in the state's history, such as Rita Cetina Gutiérrez, who founded the La Siempreviva school and advocated for women's human rights through education. She also noted the contributions of Rosa Torrez González, Mérida's first female councilor, and Raquel Dzib Cicero, one of the first three women elected to a legislative body in Mexico. Patrón Laviada emphasized the city's commitment to welcoming new residents and providing the necessary conditions for a better future and optimal urban expansion.

Conchi León, the guest speaker, highlighted the importance of diversity in Mérida and called for increased support for culture as a tool for social cohesion and collective progress. She painted a picture of peaceful coexistence in Mérida, recalling her early days in theater. She emphasized the importance of social cohesion in maintaining the city's characteristic safety and thanked the city for its financial contributions to culture. However, she also pointed out the need for greater recognition of the arts. She concluded by urging the city to continue supporting its diverse population and cultural heritage, while also embracing new developments and residents.

The session concluded with a presentation of recognition to Conchi León for her contribution to the commemorative event.
