Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa recently inaugurated a new sports field for the Cancun Municipal Veterans League. The governor emphasized the importance of sports investment, stating that it promotes healthy lifestyles, builds community, and provides a positive alternative for young people who might otherwise face challenges on the streets.
The new field, including an access road, represents an investment of over 26 million pesos. This project, a result of public-private collaboration, will benefit more than 1,600 athletes. With their family members and friends, the field is expected to serve over 6,400 people weekly for both sports practice and social interaction.
Governor Lezama Espinosa explained that the new natural grass pitches would provide quality facilities for players ranging from 4 to 60 years old. During the inauguration, a Solidarity Agreement was signed to ensure the care and conservation of the facilities. The governor emphasized that sports fields should remain alcohol-free zones, as the investments are intended to promote sports and healthy activities.
The governor also highlighted the significant investment in sports in Quintana Roo, totaling over 364 million pesos. This includes 177 million pesos invested in Benito Juárez for projects such as the renovated Cancun Polyforum and the State High-Performance Center. The new facilities also include a central office building, parking, and access roads.
Governor Lezama Espinosa stated that such developments are possible due to a government committed to fighting corruption and distributing funds back to the people transparently and honestly. The inauguration ceremony included speeches, unveiling of the commemorative plaque, and a traditional 'rosca de reyes' cutting.
The event was attended by notable figures including the mayor of Benito Juarez, Ana Paty Peralta de la Pena; Secretary of Public Works José Rafael Lara Diaz; player of the Pachuca Cancun school, Romina Matos Martin; and Jorge Antonio Martinez Pena, who explained the creation of the Veterans League.
