The Ichkabal archaeological site, located 45 kilometers from Bacalar, has reopened to the public following maintenance work. This reopening is the result of an agreement between the federal government and the local ejido.

In an effort to establish Ichkabal as a new tourist attraction in the southern region of the state, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is offering free access to the site indefinitely.

Ichkabal is notable for its cultural significance and for being home to one of the tallest pyramids of the Mayan civilization. The site is open to the public daily, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Bacalar residents granted permanent free access. Additionally, all Mexican citizens can enter for free on Sundays.

Ichkabal is the eleventh archaeological site in Quintana Roo to open to the public, following 25 years of research, restoration, and community engagement. The site's opening signifies a significant step in preserving the historical heritage of the Mayan culture in the state, while also creating jobs and opportunities for local residents.

The reopening of Ichkabal includes substantial conservation measures to ensure that future generations can admire its majestic temples, squares, and pyramids. This initiative, partly motivated by the development of the Maya Train, emphasizes the government's dedication to safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development in local communities.

Now recognized as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation, Ichkabal complements the already popular Bacalar Lagoon, enhancing the region's tourism offerings. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty is expected to draw both national and international tourists, further establishing Bacalar as a must-visit destination in the Mexican southeast.
