A recent incident involving a taxi fare dispute in Quintana Roo has garnered significant attention on social media. A foreign tourist engaged in a heated disagreement with a taxi driver from the "Adolfo López Mateos" union in Cozumel. The driver was demanding $100 (over 2,000 pesos) for a ride, which took place outside the Naval Sector complex. The tourist, who was traveling with a female companion, objected to the high fare. A video filmed by a local shopkeeper shows the driver behaving aggressively towards the tourist and shouting insults.
Bystanders, including a representative from the taxi union, were drawn to the scene. The representative tried to calm the situation and began talking with the tourists. Another taxi driver also stepped in to help mediate the dispute. The driver in question denied asking for $100 (over 2,000 pesos), but the tourist maintained that the fare was too high. He claimed that he was originally asked to pay $10 (around 200 Mexican pesos). The situation remained tense due to the ongoing exchange of accusations and raised voices, until the union representative was able to diffuse the situation.
This incident is the latest in a string of alleged taxi fare abuses in the region, causing a stir on social media. The union has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
