In Yucatán, seven individuals are infected with intestinal diseases every hour. These diseases are typically caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. The rise in intestinal infections in the region is primarily due to poor hygiene during food preparation.
These health conditions can occur under various circumstances, including consuming contaminated food or water, or even due to inadequate personal hygiene. The most common viruses linked to gastroenteritis are norovirus and rotavirus. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella are also often responsible. The severity of symptoms can range from mild to severe. In extreme cases, these infections can lead to dehydration and other medical complications.
Prevention is key in reducing the occurrence of intestinal infections. Simple preventive measures like frequent hand washing, thoroughly cooking food, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals can significantly help in preventing the spread of these pathogens.
