The recommencement of construction on the new Las Americas commercial plaza in Tulum, set to host the municipality's first cinema, has been overshadowed by a labor dispute. The contentious company, Libertad, has been accused of attempting to meddle with the collective contract of local unions working with the construction company responsible for the project. This has led to increased tensions during the building process.

Libertad has a history of labor disputes. Previously, the company has tried to reduce costs on material transport for major construction projects in the region. These include the Tulum Airport and the Mayan Train. Such actions have resulted in dissatisfaction among local unions such as the CROC, Untrac, Desoc, and José Quian Chan.

The situation escalated last Thursday when dozens of construction trucks obstructed the transportation of materials on La Selva avenue, the main access point to the project. In response, union leaders met with the Transportation Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) to resolve the issue, as Libertad does not hold concessions in the state. After authorities intervened, it was agreed to resume the transportation of materials, and construction of the plaza, set for completion in 2025, continued.

The new shopping center, located on the Tulum-Felipe Carrillo Puerto federal highway next to the trilingual school In Najil Xook, began construction in 2021. However, the project was halted when former mayor Marciano Dzul Caamal took office due to a lack of necessary permits.

Workers on the project have confirmed that the shopping center will include a Chedraui chain supermarket. There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting the project will feature a Cinépolis, as well as other establishments such as Starbucks and Coppel.
