Tulum Bar Shooting Triggers Massive Police and Military Response

A police truck with flashing lights at a night scene, cordoned off by police tape.

Late on Friday night, gunfire broke out at the 'La Barrita' bar in Tulum. The bar is situated at the crossroads of Tulum Avenue and Satélite Street. As of now, it is unclear whether there have been any casualties. The incident led to a significant police response and the immediate sealing off of the area. Army personnel were also present at the scene. Ambulances, police, and military units were deployed to secure the area. Official communication from the authorities is still awaited.

This incident is the latest in a string of violent events that have occurred in Tulum's tourist area in recent years:

  • In October 2021, two foreign tourists were killed during a shooting in downtown Tulum, raising international concerns about the region's safety.
  • In July 2024, a gunfight between drug traffickers occurred in Tulum's hotel zone, specifically outside the Caribe Swing bar, which necessitated the intervention of security forces.
  • In August 2022, four men were abducted at gunpoint in front of a hotel on the Tulum-Boca Paila road. Their bodies were later discovered in a nearby forest, showing signs of torture.

In response to these incidents, local authorities have ramped up security measures to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors. More information about the 'La Barrita' incident is expected to be released in the coming hours.
