Ruta Gastonómica App Meets with Approval from Riviera Maya Chefs Association

Playa del Carmen is set to elevate its culinary scene with the introduction of the Ruta Gastronómica, a digital initiative aimed at showcasing the city’s diverse gastronomic offerings. This project is a collaborative effort between the local restaurant industry and the Secretary of Municipal Tourism, designed to enhance the dining experience for both tourists and residents.

The Ruta Gastronómica will be officially launched at the upcoming Feria Internacional de Turismo (FITUR), scheduled from January 22 to 26, 2025, in Madrid, Spain. This international platform will serve to highlight Playa del Carmen’s rich culinary landscape to a global audience.

The initiative features a QR code-based digital map encompassing over 300 restaurants, covering approximately 85% of the city’s dining establishments. Users can access detailed information about each venue, including location, type of cuisine, and pricing, facilitating informed dining choices.

Héctor Escobedo, President of the Riviera Maya Chefs Association, praised the project, stating that it will effectively showcase the city’s culinary diversity to European markets. He emphasized that the digital format will improve tourists’ mobility and dining experiences by providing easy access to restaurant information.

Gerardo Valadez Victorio, President of CANIRAC (Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Restaurantes y Alimentos Condimentados), highlighted that the groundwork for the Ruta Gastronómica has been completed. The project is now ready for promotion at FITUR, aiming to position Playa del Carmen as a premier culinary destination.

While the digital approach caters to tech-savvy users, there is also a consideration for traditional formats. Escobedo suggested the municipal Tourism Secretariat could produce physical versions of the gastronomic guide for tourists less familiar with digital tools, ensuring inclusivity in accessing the city’s culinary offerings.

The Ruta Gastronómica is poised to significantly boost local businesses by directing diners to a wide array of restaurants, from traditional Mexican eateries to international cuisine venues. This initiative not only enriches the visitor experience but also strengthens Playa del Carmen’s reputation as a vibrant and diverse food destination.
