Following complaints about overpriced taxi services from Cancun International Airport shared on social media, Israel Malacón Osuna, the delegate of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) in Quintana Roo, advises passengers to opt for services offered by accredited providers with clearly displayed rates within the airport to prevent exploitation.
Malacón Osuna also extends this advice to those booking services through digital platforms, whether it's for transportation, accommodation, or other services. He emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the providers are legitimate, accredited, and registered with tax authorities.
The delegate further elaborated that PROFECO is a member of the airport’s security council and operations and schedules committee. He clarified that while the agency does not control taxi fares, it does manage customer complaints and ensures that official providers display their prices clearly to aid consumer decision-making.
Malacón Osuna also pointed out that PROFECO cannot intervene when services are provided by unaccredited and unregistered providers. Consequently, in cases of overcharging, such as those highlighted on social media, customers may find themselves unprotected if the provider is not formally registered.
