Early Monday morning, a significant operation was launched by the Quintana Roo Government in and around Cancún city. This came in response to a brazen daylight attack where a group of hitmen targeted and killed Fermín Cortés. Cortés was a member of the State Citizen Security Secretariat (SSP) and the former director of the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) in Cancún.
The incident occurred around 11:30 local time on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the intersection of Vallehermoso Street and Chetumal Avenue in the capital city of the Quintana Roo state. Cortés, who was on a motorcycle, was pursued by an armed group in a white vehicle. At the intersection, Cortés collided with a taxi, causing him to fall. The hitmen seized this opportunity to shoot and kill him without uttering a word.
In response to the attack, the Red Code was swiftly activated, mobilizing officers from the Cancún Municipal Police, the Quintana Roo State Police, and local paramedics. Upon arrival, they confirmed the death of the former prison director.
The State Justice General's Office (FGE) has since opened a new investigation into this violent murder. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the crime. Evidence has been collected for inclusion in the investigation file, with the aim of identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack.
Initial inquiries suggest that Cortés was an active member of the Citizen Security Secretariat at the time of his death, as stated by the Quintana Roo Prosecutor's Office in a social media post.
