The Riviera Maya, a popular tourist destination in Mexico, is projected to end April with an 82% occupancy rate across its approximately 57,000 hotel rooms. This figure is close to the high occupancy rates usually seen during peak travel seasons.
Data from the Quintana Roo Tourist Promotion Council reveals that the region has not yet hit the 70% occupancy level usually seen around this time of year. In previous years, a dip in tourism was typically observed for a few weeks during this period.
As of Friday, April 26th, the Riviera Maya reported an overall 82% occupancy rate for the month. The highest occupancy rate for the month, 89%, was recorded on Friday, April 5th. This figure is comparable to those seen during peak vacation days.
There were, however, a few days in April when occupancy dipped below 80%. These lower figures contributed to an overall decrease in the number of tourists staying in local hotels. The lowest occupancy rate for the month, 77%, was recorded on Wednesday, April 24th.
In the first four months of the year, the Riviera Maya consistently reported occupancy rates above 82%. February saw the highest occupancy rate, at 88%.
Preliminary figures suggest that the Riviera Maya's April 2024 occupancy rate is slightly higher than that of April 2023, which was 81.7%. Despite this, there were more rooms available this year, with the region offering around 56,000 units compared to last year's 47,246.
In April 2023, an average of 42,865 rooms were occupied each day. This year, the average daily occupancy for the same month was 47,246 rooms.
According to local tourism authorities, a slight decrease in occupancy is expected in May, before the summer holiday season begins. However, they anticipate that occupancy rates will climb back above 85% during the summer, with peaks potentially exceeding 90%.
