Revolutionizing Remote Connectivity in ‘Zone of Silence’! Find Out How

Javier Ayuso, Director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology (IQUIT), has acknowledged the challenges of providing internet coverage from Tulum International Airport to the municipal seat of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

After the opening of Tulum International Airport, Ayuso confirmed that a section of the so-called 'zone of silence' now has intermittent internet service. He explained that efforts are underway to address connectivity needs from the airport to Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The high population density along this stretch complicates the process due to the resources needed for installing repeater antennas.

"Determining the number of antennas required is crucial, but assessing the environmental impact in the area is equally important. We are still exploring the best strategies to minimize potential environmental damage," Ayuso stated.

He suggested that the Maya Train facilities constructed in the area could potentially house the repeater antennas. However, necessary permits are still being processed. "We hope to finalize the necessary agreements before the end of the current administration," he added.

Ayuso reiterated that the stretch from Tulum International Airport, through Muyil, to the municipal seat of Tulum now has intermittent internet service. "Connectivity is lost at certain points, but users can access the service," he clarified.

Efforts are also being made to bring internet connectivity to the Xcalak community, which has been a longstanding request. "We are ready to install an antenna. We have the space and the plans, but we lack the funds. This is the only thing preventing the residents of Xcalak from having internet service," Ayuso commented.

As for providing free internet in schools, Ayuso highlighted the collaboration with the federal government through the Digital Transformation Agency announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum. "This creates a synergy with the governor to address the needs of internet service in educational facilities," he concluded.
