Isla Mujeres has set a precedent as the first municipality in Quintana Roo to form a partnership with the state's Secretary of Tourism (Sedetur). The agreement was finalized by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde and Sedetur's head, Bernardo Cueto Riestra. The main goal is to fortify the State Tourism Registry (Returq) and create new opportunities for local service providers. This partnership is a result of the agreements made at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) 2025 in Madrid, Spain. The primary objectives include training, formal business registration, and promoting practices that increase the competitiveness of the area.
Mayor Gómez Ricalde stated, "We are striving to give tourism service providers access to tools that will stimulate their growth and professionalization, with a strong emphasis on sustainability." The agreement involves workshops, registration campaigns, and collaborative actions that will directly benefit the families living on the island. It will also help to solidify Isla Mujeres as a dependable and competitive tourist destination. This is due to its status as a "Magic Town" and its potential to host the Costa Mujeres project.
The signing of this agreement will also enhance Isla Mujeres' reputation as a key tourist spot. Moreover, it will give visitors more confidence in the services provided by registered businesses.
