Tourists visiting Cancún have reported a new scam involving local taxi drivers on social media. The scam involves drivers posing as hotel couriers and misleading tourists about their hotel's transportation services.
In one instance, a tourist shared a video explaining that she had booked a stay at the Xcaret hotel, which included transportation. However, upon arrival, she was approached by taxi drivers who claimed they were there to transport her. They informed her that the hotel's transport was out of service and that the hotel would reimburse her for the taxi fare.
The taxi drivers attempted to charge her between 200 and 250 dollars for the trip to the hotel, equivalent to between 4,150 and 5,180 Mexican pesos. They assured her that this amount would be refunded by the hotel.
Fortunately, the tourist did not fall for the scam. She contacted the hotel directly, and hotel staff located her inside the airport. She was then advised not to use any taxi services in Cancún.
Other tourists have reported similar experiences. Some have mentioned a man with a QR code inside the airport who insists on a tax payment for leaving the terminal.
These complaints against Cancún taxi drivers and other transportation vendors are not new and have been increasing on social media recently.
One tourist, Steven Jhons from Panama, reported that transportation vendors followed him in Cancún's airport, insisting that he use their service. They warned him that using a transportation app was illegal and threatened to take him to jail. They also threatened to "show him how things work in Mexico" and take his picture to share with their colleagues, effectively preventing him from using any app-based transportation services in Cancún.
