A derailment occurred on Section 6 of the Maya Train, near the "Limones" station in the municipality of Bacalar, approximately 80 kilometers from Chetumal. Four rail cars, pushed by a locomotive, left the tracks, resulting in injuries to two machinery operators. Despite the incident, passenger transfer operations were not impacted.

The derailed rail cars are owned by a private company, contracted by the Secretary of Defense (Sedena), to provide heavy material transfer services and track inspection on Section 6 of the Maya Train.

The accident took place in the early hours of Thursday, January 30. The derailment happened as one of the four cars, propelled by a small locomotive, was arriving at the "Limones" station. This prompted a significant response from Sedena, the National Guard, and project workers. Using telescopic cranes, they managed to get the cars back on the tracks and clear the section by 4 in the afternoon.

The same track is used by the Maya Train, which carries passengers from the city of Chetumal to Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum, Playa del Carmen – Cancun, and vice versa. The authorities overseeing the project, a key initiative of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have remained silent about the incident, with only a photograph of the accident circulating on social media.

The two injured machinery operators were urgently transported to the Bacalar community hospital. After being stabilized, they were transferred to the Zone Military Hospital in Chetumal. The National Guard cordoned off the site from federal highway 307 to prevent onlookers from accessing the area. As of now, the responsible authorities have not issued any statements regarding the incident. Despite the derailment, the passenger train departing from Chetumal continued to operate as usual.
