Playa del Carmen Name Change Proposal: Forums Scheduled

The first public forum discussing the proposed constitutional reform to change the name of Solidaridad municipality to Playa del Carmen was led by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado. The event, held in the dome of the first park of Villas del Sol, drew a crowd of over 300 people. Mercado was joined by Luis Herrera Quiam, the City Council's General Secretary, municipal officials, and council members, who all explained the reasoning behind the proposal.

Mercado stated, "Playa del Carmen is a name recognized both nationally and internationally. This proposed change aims to eradicate any remaining traces of past corruption and strengthen our historical and cultural identity. The Virgin of Carmen is a significant part of our history and embodies the essence of our fishing village."

Mercado also pointed out that the name Solidaridad was imposed during the administration of former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari as part of a neoliberal regime. Now, for the first time, citizens will have a direct say on the matter. During the forum, attendees expressed their views and learned about the potential benefits of the name change. The municipal government emphasized that both national and international tourists are more familiar with the name Playa del Carmen than Solidaridad, which could boost its global recognition and appeal.

Future public forums on this topic will take place at various locations throughout the municipality:

  • February 5: Dome of the “Lázaro Cárdenas” park, Colosio neighborhood
  • February 13: Dome behind the Mayor’s Office of Puerto Aventuras
  • February 15: “Xaman Ha” City Theater

Once the consultation process concludes, if the proposal garners sufficient public support, it will be forwarded to the XVIII Legislature of the State Congress for review and potential approval.
