A man posing as a real estate broker has been arrested in Mexico City and is now facing trial in Querétaro for allegedly committing fraud in 2019. The suspect is accused of selling two lots in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, that legally belonged to another company, causing financial losses of over 7 million pesos.
The Fraudulent Sale
According to authorities, the suspect, operating through a real estate company, brokered the sale of two properties in Playa del Carmen in March 2019. The transaction, including documentation handover, was arranged at an office in Querétaro. The buyer later discovered that the rightful owner had not authorized the sale and was actively claiming ownership of the lots, leading to significant financial losses.
Investigation and Arrest
After the victim filed a complaint with the Querétaro Prosecutor’s Office—since the legal paperwork had been completed there—investigators launched an inquiry into the fraudulent transaction. Tracing the suspect’s financial activities led authorities to an address in Mexico City.
On February 10, officers from the Querétaro Investigative Police (PID), working with Mexico City authorities, executed an arrest warrant against the suspect. He was then transferred to Querétaro to face charges.
Legal Proceedings
During his initial court appearance, prosecutors provided evidence that the suspect had no legal authority to sell the properties, as the deeds were registered under a different company. As a result, the judge ruled to proceed with the case, placing the suspect in preventive detention. A three-month period has been set for further investigation before a final ruling on his legal status is made.
