Governor Mara Lezama has announced a comprehensive plan to combat Sargassum seaweed on the beaches of Quintana Roo. The plan, supported by the Secretary of the Navy, is in preparation for the annual Sargassum influx season, which typically runs from April to October.

The plan includes four key stages: preparation, detection, containment, and collection. The preparation phase involves getting both personnel and equipment ready for the task. This includes maintaining and preparing infrastructure such as Sargassum-carrying ships, containment and collection resources, minor vessels, and ensuring personnel readiness.

Detection involves satellite monitoring and maritime surveillance. The containment phase will see the installation of barriers and the use of Sargassum carrying vessels to prevent the seaweed from reaching the beaches. Finally, the collection phase involves gathering the Sargassum in shallow waters and delivering it to the municipal authority.

The Secretary of the Navy reported that the preparation phase is currently underway, with a focus on ensuring constant attention to the influx of this macroalgae. The aim is to prioritize keeping the beaches clean and contributing to a Sargassum-free marine environment.

Governor Lezama emphasized that these actions are part of a broader Sargassum Attention Strategy and the New Agreement for Welfare and Development. The Secretary of the Navy plays a crucial role in this effort through the Navy of Mexico.

The Governor also highlighted the importance of this strategy for Quintana Roo, given the region's reliance on tourism. Keeping the beaches free of Sargassum is key to maintaining the success and prosperity of the local economy.
