The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Campeche has confirmed that a group, including an official and his family, and a social media influencer, entered the Calakmul archaeological zone outside of the allowed hours. The group was transported from the Tren Maya Calakmul Hotel to the site, which is recognized as a Cultural and Natural Heritage site.
In a statement, INAH Campeche clarified that it was not involved in the tour taken by the two couples, which was documented in a video on TikTok. Among those involved was the Deputy Attorney General of the State Attorney's Office of Campeche, Arturo Bravo Muñoz, who is associated with the current state administration.
"Regarding a video recently shared on TikTok, about a night visit to the Calakmul archaeological zone, the National Institute of Anthropology and History states that it did not authorize any entry to this heritage site outside of the permitted hours," the statement read. INAH further emphasized that the visiting hours for the archaeological zone are from 8:00 to 17:00, Monday to Sunday. However, the organization, led by Adriana Velázquez Morlet, did not comment on potential consequences for violating regulations in a federal zone, stating that "in any case of non-compliance with the regulations, INAH will act according to the law."
The after-hours tour was documented on TikTok by "@pawihuerta," in a video lasting five minutes and twenty-four seconds, starting from the hotel lobby at 3:40.
The video features two couples: Paulina Huerta and Alejandro Rivero, as well as Arturo Bravo Muñoz, Deputy Attorney General of Campeche, and his partner, Andrea Sadek, daughter of the director of the Women's Institute, Vania Kelleher. Arturo Bravo is also the son of the current Secretary of Protection and Citizen Security, Marcela Muñoz Martínez.
Pedro Samuel Dzul Moo, the general secretary of the Democratic Union of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, has urged INAH Campeche to enforce the law and ensure compliance with the rules established for the protection of cultural heritage, as well as the safety of custodians and visitors.
