The environmental organization, Living Corals Cozumel, has reported significant harm to the local marine ecosystem after finding over 60 dead parrotfish near the El Cantil building on the coast. This discovery was made during a routine coastal monitoring operation, where the environmentalists found mutilated fish floating in the water off a vacant lot.
The incident has sparked grave concern, as parrotfish are protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, making their capture illegal throughout the year.
Parrotfish are crucial to the health of coral reefs. They feed on algae, helping to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem. A decrease in their numbers could severely impact biodiversity and affect other species that rely on reefs for survival.
In response to this incident, the environmental group is urging authorities and the public to enhance protection measures for this species and prevent further incidents that could jeopardize the island's ecosystem.
