The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) recently hosted a unique day at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park. The event featured a variety of activities including a "Footprints of Consciousness" meditation session, observation of an archeoastronomical phenomenon at the archaeological site of El Caracol, and a mangrove ecosystem restoration activity.

The day kicked off with the "Footprints of Consciousness" meditation led by Spanish teacher Luis Miguel Pérez Martín. Participants were encouraged to contemplate their connection to nature, express gratitude for the present moment, and relish the experience of greeting a new day at the beach. This included feeling the breeze, listening to the waves, and soaking in the warmth of the sun. Following the meditation, participants observed a unique archeoastronomical event: the sun aligning with the window of the upper dome of the El Caracol archaeological site.

Park Director, Jesús Benavides Andrade, provided insight into the observation, explaining that the unique pre-Hispanic structure was believed to whistle due to the wind passing through the seashells inside. This phenomenon was associated with hurricanes and wind worship by the ancient Mayans. The day concluded with a mangrove ecosystem restoration session, led by the Deputy Director of Punta Sur, Héctor González Cortés. This activity underscored the FPMC's dedication to environmental education, conservation, and natural resource restoration.

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the General Director of the FPMC, emphasized that such events foster environmental consciousness, education, and community involvement in conservation efforts. She stated that these activities align with the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, a initiative endorsed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. Marrufo expressed that these events demonstrate their commitment to protecting natural resources and enhancing the relationship between individuals and their environment.
