The construction of Playa del Carmen's new welcome arch is expected to be completed in 40 days. This project is part of the city's branding campaign aimed at attracting more tourists. Solidaridad Mayor, Estefanía Mercado Asencio, emphasized that this is more than just an attraction. It's an investment that includes the installation of facial recognition security cameras to identify every individual entering the city from the north.

"We are just 40 days away from seeing the fruits of this project," said the mayor. "The assembly work is being done offsite to avoid traffic disruptions. The installation of this landmark arch will be carried out at night, so no one, whether a resident or a tourist, will enter Playa del Carmen without being identified by facial recognition or license plates."

The municipality has invested over 40 million pesos into this project, according to an update from Mercado Asencio. The arch will be situated approximately 10 kilometers north of the city.

"Playa del Carmen has so much to offer and we want to promote it internationally. Our economy is 100% dependent on tourism. We've taken significant steps such as launching our city brand and proposing a name change to enhance our tourist identity," the mayor added. The northern arch will be complemented by similar structures to the south and another one on the city's west exit towards Merida. Additionally, these structures will be enhanced by a seaside viewpoint that the local government plans to construct within the year.

"We're already working with sculptors on the seaside viewpoint on Constituyentes. This will attract more tourists, benefiting local families," said the mayor. As for the jungle viewpoint, its location is yet to be determined, but it is planned for completion next year.
